Hans Christian Andersen wrote a lovely story of an Emperor and his "invisible" clothes. People would whisper and stare at the naked Emperor parading through the streets.
I feel like that sometimes when I walk around Shanghai, except that I am fully clothed. I guess part of it is the Chinese culture of staring at others. So when you walk into a busy restaurant, diners will stop eating and talking (if they were to begin with) and give each of the new arrivals a quick "once over" glance. If there's a foreigner (lao wai) in your party of course, you will get a few more lingering glances.
But I often get theses stares just walking down the street. Sometimes it's just idle, bored people who have nothing better to do. But what gets me sometimes is when other GUYS see me approaching and almost stop to analyse what I'm wearing from top to bottom, then as I pass, they'll glance back to continue the fashion evaluation from the rear. I rarely look back but can feel their eyes on me.
I guess it's because I don't dress the way most local men do, especially for work. I don't wear golf shirts with black leather shoes and nylon, almost transparent, socks. I don't carry an underarm "man bag" either. I do sometimes wear shoes that are not black as well as shirts that are not white or grey, and I do wear ties which are very rare in China.
So to these bewildered onlookers, I may as well be walking down the street naked!
